In a world where representation matters more than ever, Netflix is taking significant strides towards embracing diversity and inclusion within the entertainment industry. This journey of transformation is not just about numbers; it’s about amplifying voices that have long been unheard and ensuring that stories from all corners of the world find their place on screen.
Embracing Diversity From Personal Experience
The story begins with an individual, a young Indian girl, whose nomadic upbringing spanned the UK, Zambia, and eventually the United States. Growing up, she couldn’t help but notice that the characters on her favorite TV shows and in movies didn’t look like her. Their narratives rarely mirrored her own experiences. This realization ignited a passion within her, one that would eventually lead her into the heart of the entertainment industry.
As she delved deeper into the world of scripts and productions, she came to recognize that her unique background was, in fact, a superpower. It granted her the ability to view stories through a multitude of diverse lenses. Today, she is more enthusiastic than ever about collaborating with creators from across the globe to share and elevate narratives that have remained unexplored. And it is within this commitment to inclusivity that she realized the importance of identifying the voices that have often been overlooked.
Netflix’s Pledge to Inclusivity
Two years ago, Netflix embarked on an ambitious journey. They teamed up with Dr. Stacy L. Smith and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, setting out to examine a spectrum of inclusion metrics. These metrics encompassed gender, race/ethnicity, LGBTQ+ representation, and disability portrayal in their US-commissioned films and series. Their pledge was clear: to release progress reports every two years until 2026, holding themselves accountable and propelling lasting change within the industry.
Creating Change Behind and In Front of the Camera
Through their partnership with USC, Netflix unearthed a powerful truth—more inclusion behind the camera translates to better representation on the screen. This revelation led to the establishment of the Netflix Fund for Creative Equity in 2021, with a commitment of $100 million over five years. The aim? To create pathways for talent from underrepresented communities across the globe. Today, Netflix unveils the outcomes of these endeavors and charts a course for the future.
USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative Study
The latest findings, covering Netflix US films and series from 2020-2021, herald substantial improvements year-over-year in terms of gender and racial diversity:
- Achieving Gender Equality in Leading Roles: An impressive 55% of all Netflix films and series from 2018-2021 featured a girl or woman as the lead or co-lead.
- Enhanced Representation for People of Color: In 2020-2021, nearly half (47%) of Netflix films and series featured a lead or co-lead from an underrepresented racial/ethnic group.
- More Women Behind the Camera: In 2021, 26.9% of directors on Netflix films were women, compared to a mere 12.7% across top-grossing films in the same year. Additionally, 38% of show creators in 2021 were women, a significant increase from 26.9% in 2018.
- Strides for Women of Color: Women of color also made significant gains as series directors, growing from 5.6% in 2018 to 11.8% in 2021. Similar progress was observed in writer and creator roles. In 2021, nearly a third of films (27.7%) and over half of series (54.75%) had women of color as leads or co-leads.
However, the study also highlighted ongoing disparities, particularly for Latinx, Middle Eastern/North African, Indigenous, and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander communities. Additionally, there’s room for improvement in representing characters with disabilities.
Progress on the Fund for Creative Equity
In 2021, Netflix launched the Netflix Fund for Creative Equity, a dedicated initiative designed to train creatives for opportunities on Netflix productions, paving the way for their success in the entertainment industry. Here are some noteworthy highlights:
Investing in Emerging Talent Globally: In just two years, Netflix has invested $29 million in over 100 programs, collaborating with more than 80 organizations across 35 countries.
Developing Talent Across the Spectrum: The Fund has supported over 4,500 creatives, spanning directors, producers, writers, visual effects artists, and more. It provides resources and training to prepare them for their roles in local industries. Films from Netflix-funded programs have been showcased at over 40 film festivals.
Creating Opportunities on Netflix Productions: Netflix has placed 395 creatives from its programs in various roles on productions worldwide, spanning from the UK to France, Nigeria to Canada, and the United States. Participants in the Series Director Development Program have directed episodes for popular Netflix series.
Continuing the Journey Towards Inclusivity
While these accomplishments are undeniably impressive, Netflix acknowledges that there’s still much work ahead. Therefore, they are thrilled to announce several new programs, each aimed at furthering their commitment to inclusivity and diversity:
- Shondaland Producers Inclusion and Ladder Initiatives (US): This revamped initiative focuses on training underrepresented line producers within the studio system.
- Gold Producers Accelerator (US): Led by Nina Yang Bongiovi, this program offers Asian and Pacific Islander producers paid shadowing placements on independent films, along with mentorship and tailored masterclasses.
- imagineNATIVE Production Mentorship Program (Canada): Indigenous creatives will receive paid on-set mentorship opportunities on a production in Canada.
- Netflix x Film Companion Take Ten Program (India): Five emerging Indian filmmakers will create a limited series and receive guidance from industry professionals.
- European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs (EAVE), House of Europe, the New York Film Academy, and the Ukrainian Film Academy (Ukraine): These organizations are offering a series of digital masterclasses for Ukrainian producers and line producers.
Netflix’s commitment to amplifying diverse voices and cultivating an inclusive entertainment landscape remains steadfast. Their journey is not just about progress; it’s about creating a future where every story finds its place, and every voice is heard.
